In a major push towards expanding its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, Microsoft has announced a $3 billion investment in India over the next two years. This marks the company’s largest-ever investment in the country, reflecting its commitment to strengthening its presence in one of the fastest-growing tech markets.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the plan during a conference in Bengaluru, highlighting the importance of India’s skilled tech workforce and cost-efficient operations in driving global innovation. The investment will focus on expanding Azure cloud infrastructure and developing advanced AI capabilities.

Additionally, Microsoft plans to upskill 10 million people in AI across India by 2030. Last year alone, the company trained 2.4 million individuals, underscoring its efforts to prepare India’s workforce for the AI-driven future.

India is already home to Microsoft’s second-largest developer community on GitHub, after the United States. Nadella emphasized the significant contributions of Indian developers to projects like GitHub Copilot, a generative AI tool for programmers.

As global tech giants increase their focus on India, Microsoft joins companies like Nvidia and AMD in making substantial investments in the region. With more than 20,000 employees spread across 10 Indian cities, Microsoft aims to leverage local talent and foster innovation.

The investment also addresses growing expectations for tech companies to demonstrate returns on their AI spending. While many AI projects are still in their early stages, tools like GitHub Copilot have already shown promising financial results.

Hundreds of tech enthusiasts gathered at Nadella’s keynote speech, part of the “Microsoft AI Tour,” to gain insights into upcoming products and hear directly from the CEO. The excitement reflects the growing interest in AI and its potential to transform industries in India.

With this investment, Microsoft is not only enhancing its technological infrastructure but also contributing to India’s digital transformation and economic growth.
